Unbeaten Blackhawks hold off Bataiva
September 2, 2009 BY PAUL JOHNSON -- FOR THE BEACON NEWS
West Aurora's boys soccer team is off to a sparkling 6-0 start after Wednesday's 2-1 nonconference win over Batavia, but don't tell that to coach Joe Sustersic.
The Blackhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see the Bulldogs score the first goal that West has allowed all season to get back into the game. West held on for the win, but Sustersic is preaching to his club that there is much more work to be done.
"We know how to possess the ball, but on top of the 18, we decide to have some difficulties finishing at times," Sustersic said. "If it were boxing, we would have won the game on most people's cards, but that's not what counts. The only thing that counts is what's on the scoreboard. We've got to learn how to finish better. We scored enough today to get the win, but not enough to make me or anyone on the team satisfied."
Sophomore Adrian Aceves has emerged as the Blackhawks' go-to player so far this season, and he didn't disappoint Wednesday. Aceves scored both of West's goals to give him eight goals in his young varsity career. He has scored at least one goal in every West game this season. His other multi-goal game came against Plainfield North.
Aceves got the Blackhawks on the board with 27:23 left in the first half. Moments after being whistled offside on a potential scoring chance, West worked the ball into the Bulldogs' zone once again. Senior Victor Alfaro set Aceves up with a sweet pass and Aceves punched it in to open a 1-0 lead.
"The guys passed the ball in and I went in and first-touched it and put it on the right post," Aceves said. "This is a good start for varsity. Hopefully it will get even better."
Aceves struck again at the 31:33 mark of the second half. After seeing two golden opportunities saved in spectacular fashion by Batavia keeper Ty Witkowski to start the half, Aceves was able to convert a pass from junior Mario Alvarez into another goal to open a 2-0 lead.
