West Aurora's Depth Drops Wolves
September 9, 2009 - The Oswego East girls tennis team won at No. 1 singles and doubles on Wednesday, but host West Aurora won the other matches and finished with a 5-2 victory over the Wolves.
At No. 1 singles, Oswego East sophomore Kelly Zapral topped West senior Brooke Henry in a high-powered match, 6-4, 6-1.
"Kelly was playing phenomenal today," Oswego East coach Mike Dutton said. "She had enough stamina to outlast (Henry) in the match, and that was a big thing."
West Aurora took the next three singles matches. No. 2 Haley Henry, a freshman, lost the first set 6-1 to Oswego East's Erinn Brooks but came back to win the next two, 6-1, 6-2.
"Haley got herself together and emotionally and played a lot smarter," Blackhawks coach Brian Brooks said.
At No. 3, West junior Nicole Maenza topped Oswego East senior Stephanie Awad 6-3, 6-3. In the last match of the day, West junior Abby Zak defeated Wolves freshman Brittany Fredrick, 7-6 (6), 6-4 at No. 4.
"Our fourth singles player (Ariana Reiser) was hurt tonight, so she didn't play, but Abby Zac came in and won a big match for us," Brian Brooks said. "That was a great win for her. She raised her level really well."
